In recent weeks a leading Irish insurance company has started incentivizing customers to buy and install dashcams in their cars.
While this has obvious benefits to the insurance policy holder (saving money) and may help to promote better road user behaviour, it’s important to bear in mind that the recording of images in this way
- may fall within the scope of EU and National Data Protection Law
- the shared purpose between the insurer and the insured will create a “Joint Controller” relationship
- obligations and responsibilities come with the power to process and publish personal information that directly or indirectly identifies others.
