Castlebridge Managing Director nominated for Presidency of DAMA International, declines.

“I’m humbled and honoured to have been nominated by two chapters of this venerable organisation.” says Daragh O Brien.

Daragh O Brien was announced on the 2nd of October 2020 as one of the candidates for election as president of DAMA International.

An important figure-head role in the data management community, the President of DAMA International works with the volunteer Board of Directors to steer the strategy and oversee execution of the mission and goals of DAMA (www.dama.org).

Daragh has previously served on the Board of DAMA and of IAIDQ (now IQ International) in over two decades of volunteering in the development of the information management profession. He continues as an active contributor to the Leaders’ Data Group (www.dataleaders.org) and in other forums.

Declining Nomination

Due to inconsistencies in the election process however, Daragh has decided to decline the nomination at this time.

“It is essential for the future of DAMA and for its ability to influence thinking in data management that the election of the President be free of any risk of innuendo or implication as to the validity of the outcome. Resolving these issues with the requisite level of transparency will take time and could impact the election cycle, affecting candidates for other roles. I have therefore taken the difficult decision to decline the nomination. DAMA is bigger than any one individual, and DAMA’s membership deserves a clear and certain choice for President.”

DAMA Democracy

Daragh welcomes the recent bylaw changes in DAMA that allow “Central” members who are not aligned with any Chapter to run for Board level positions, and he would encourage other Central members who do not have local chapter to join to think about getting involved in the leadership of DAMA International by running for any upcoming Board positions.  Central members remain unable to vote in DAMA elections, which are decided by the leadership of DAMA’s world-wide network of local Chapters.

Getting involved with the leadership of the profession has given me life long friends and an invaluable insight into how we can make progress on key issues in information management as a profession.  I would encourage anyone thinking about developing leadership skills to consider how they might contribute.”, says O Brien.

Chapter Contacts

This will be the only statement from Daragh O Brien on this matter. Any DAMA chapter officials who have questions about the background to this decision should contact the DAMA Presidents’ Council Chair, Tony Mazzarella (contact details can be found here: https://www.dama.org/team)
