Castlebridge

Castebridge Research

Since 2018 Castlebridge has been officially recognised as a research organisation by the Irish Department of Enterprise for our work in data governance research and data strategy innovation.

The company served as the principal industrial partner in the PROTECT ITN programme, an EU-funded Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network that investigated the intersection of ethics, law, and knowledge engineering for governing AI and personal data between 2018 and 2024.

Through this collaboration with the ADAPT Centre, Castlebridge successfully supervised and graduated two PhD researchers in conjunction with TCD Law faculty, demonstrating sustained engagement with cutting-edge academic research in AI governance and data protection.

The strategic research function in Castlebridge is led by Daragh O Brien. Daragh is an internationally recognised consultant and educator in Data Strategy and Data Governance. He co-authored the influential Data Ethics (2nd Edition) and has contributed to several other academic and professional publications, as well as contributing to data governance research in Ireland and internationally.

He is currently pursuing a Professional Doctorate in Engineering (PDEng.) at the University of Limerick, focusing on staff competencies for Data Governance in Hybrid Intelligence-enabled workforces.

This ongoing research directly informs Castlebridge’s approach to addressing the human factors critical to successful digital transformation and AI adoption.

Industry Framework Contributions and Academic Collaborations

Castlebridge’s research team has made active contributions to major industry frameworks including the DAMA Data Management Body of Knowledge (DMBOK) and the Innovation Value Institute‘s IT Capability Maturity Framework (IVI IT-CMF). As a member of the Innovation Value Institute, Castlebridge collaborates with Maynooth University as part of the EMPOWER-Data Governance project, contributing to data governance research initiatives such as the Data Governance Roadmap for Ireland. We are committed to maintaining strong connections between academic research and practical industry application.

Connecting with the Global Data Management Community

Since 2024, Castlebridge has established and hosted the Data Leaders’ Summit, an annual intensive conference in Wexford, Ireland that brings together the global data management community. Building on a lineage dating back to 2005 of focused data management events organised by Daragh O Brien, the Summit represents a distinctive forum where data leaders can engage in deep, strategic discussions on critical challenges facing organisations.

Operating under Chatham House Rule, the Summit prioritises depth over breadth, featuring keynote speakers, expert panels, and facilitated discussions on strategic themes relating to data management, data governance, and application of AI for organisational and societal benefit.

The Summit includes complementary skills development master classes with international experts, and has established itself as a unique venue for bridging academic research with real-world practitioner experience in data strategy, data governance, and data leadership.

Castlebridge is also an active contributor to voluntary think-tank The Data Leaders, a multi-national collaboration of data management practitioners working to develop and promote practical best practices and insights into the world of data management.
